The Cape May-Lewes Ferry launched its operation in 1964, thanks in part to the opening of Virginia's Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. No longer needing its ferries, Virginia sold four to the Delaware River & Bay Authority for $3.3 million which were rechristened the SS Delaware, SS New Jersey, SS Cape May, and MV Cape Henlopen.

The Cape May-Lewes Ferry has since replaced the aging fleet with five newer vessels. The fifth vessel, the MV Cape May, was placed in operation in May, 1985, nearly 11 years after the completion of the first new vessel, the MV Delaware.

On Memorial Day, 1990, the MV Delaware was called upon for a unique rescue mission. The passenger liner, Regent Star, had gone aground some 25 miles upriver. After a two hour trip, the MV Delaware's bow was maneuvered into the Regent Star's port side, allowing over 900 passengers to disembark. The success of this rescue mission was attributed to the skill and dedication of the crew of the Cape May-Lewes Ferry.

The Ferry has transported people from not only every state in the nation, but also from around the globe. On April 23, 1992, the Ferry's 20 millionth passenger crossed the Delaware on the MV Twin Capes.
